ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the latest curriculum, Curriculum 2013, for senior high school, to see how “the environment” is represented. We see the impact of Islamisation upon the education system. The chapter first outlines early efforts to introduce EE to schools in Indonesia, then goes through the curriculum in detail. The salient feature is the religious framing. Students are to realise and be thankful that God created the universe in such a way that it is suitable for humans to live in, and that so much has been provided for human exploitation. In the optional subject of Geography, there are also messages about caring for the environment, using resources wisely and responsibly, and the first and only mention of environmental sustainability and sustainable development. True EE carries very little weight in the new Curriculum.

The chapter addresses religious themes in Curriculum 2013: creationism; instrumentalism and the way the environment was created as natural resources for humans to exploit; divine and human agency and responsibility; the desired affects and values; environmental nationalism; religious resources that are neglected in the Curriculum; and some problems with religious EE. Finally it examines how the environment is presented in textbooks.
