ABSTRACT

Deliberate hypocrisy could be effectively used as a strategy of freedom by the women of polite society. Women’s politeness was also hypocritical by necessity, since it required women to consciously and relentlessly mould their bodies to acquire normative polite femininity while maintaining that it was natural and innate to them. Women’s hypocritical practices could manifest through their display of sensibility or dress, and provided women power over their own lives.
