ABSTRACT

The introduction presents the background to the volume, outlines its key themes, and introduces the Parts to follow. We introduce the key historical, cultural and theoretical contexts in which our research is embedded, namely: revitalisation work in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), also referred to as Sakha Sire, since the 1990s; silence and absence; presence and voice; and the wider context of creativity, art and making. Each of these contexts is examined in relation to supporting literature. We also explain how our positionality has influenced the research that underpins the book.
