ABSTRACT

The Sakha language, until the end of the nineteenth century, did not have a written form, and oral stories and ancient epic narratives have always been an important aspect of Sakha culture. In this part, we highlight the key narrative themes inspired by our interlocutors in order to reveal the narrative capacities of historical objects. These narratives used throughout the book create a thematic foundation of our work. We further consider the implications of these narrative capacities for future artistic engagements with historical objects, particularly in contexts where people have been silenced and see the potential of objects for making their voices heard.
