ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on Social Thinking and Collective Memory. First, it looks at the work, in psychology in general and in sociocultural psychology in particular, that has explored how we understand social others and represent the societies within which we live. More specifically, it reviews research on social cognition, social representations, and discursive theories. Second, it discusses the literature on collective memory and its roots, starting in the works of Maurice Halbwachs. Research on collected memory, psychosocial memory, and collective remembering is presented in turn, with special attention being given to the discursive, mediated, and narrative approaches to collective remembering.
