ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the varied ways that reproduction has been controlled in the modern world. The chapter is divided in two between reproductive rights and reproductive justice. In the first section we critically examine social control over human reproductivity in terms of contraception, abortion, population control and sexual identity. The second section examines the social determinants of reproductive health and reproduction globally. It begins with reproduction and colonization in terms of restriction of some populations in the name of environmental sustainability, protection of other populations in the name of nationality and development and protection of dominant ideologies (heteronormativity, racial and ethnic purity and ableism) through the restriction of reproduction and forced sterilization.
