ABSTRACT

New Reproductive Technologies (NRTs) are presented here in an overview in two parts: the first deals primarily with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the second with genetics. IVF as ground-breaking for externalizing the moment of conception in humans for the first time is presented first in terms of prior and key developments in the meat and dairy industries. Then the chapter moves to examine how IVF enters the medical realm and becomes the anchor to a new specialty in fertility medicine. Genetic engineering is examined as always present with IVF and the source of increasing financial speculation for the enormous promise it represents in medical applications and beyond.
