ABSTRACT
The introduction starts in the present moment, rendering visible urban Indigenous relocation, resurgence, and community development in not only the Australian city of Newcastle, but also in cities throughout Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the United States of America. Here invisibility is used in two ways. First, it reveals the ongoing struggle for Indigenous recognition in cities. Second, it operates as a discursive mechanism to juxtapose invisibility alongside success in the context of Indigenous resurgence and community development. This technique is used to show the complexity of Indigenous resurgence and community development in cities.
The introduction also explains why Indigenous resurgence and community development in cities is worth understanding; not least the fact that large numbers of Indigenous people live in cities throughout Australia, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the United States today. Importantly though, it introduces the manuscript’s four main interrelated purposes.
