ABSTRACT

This chapter compares and contrasts the initiatives taken by Queen’s University Belfast (UK) and Trinity College Dublin (IE) to identify and address the academic gender pay gap. As context, the chapter initially sets out the wider policy environment on gender pay in both countries. It then examines the academic staff structure in each university and maps out the formal and discretionary pay arrangements in both universities. Section three discusses the data collection process and the tailored measures taken to address the gender pay gap revealed by the data. The chapter concludes by discussing the shared and individual challenges encountered by Trinity College and Queen’s University and draws general lessons from their experiences.
