ABSTRACT

While there are numerous memoirs written from women’s perspectives about infertility, this chapter explores memoirs written by men. Men’s perspectives are, as Marsiglio, Lohan, and Culley have noted, “compelling,” but too few studies exist that consider these perspectives. By drawing on memoirs, I am able to engage closely with the experiences of a given author and to find commonalities between memoirs, for instance, all memoirs go into great detail about having sperm analysed, or in the words of Greg Wolfe, “how to make love to a plastic cup.” Each of these memoirs presents a deeper appreciation for men’s experiences with infertility and how it affected and influenced their masculinities.
