ABSTRACT

The final chapter looks at the figure of the “last man.” What would it mean to be the last fertile man? Is this as some suggest a fantasy, or is it a nightmare? Drawing on two very different texts—Flesh Gordon and the Cosmic Cheerleaders and Mr. Adam—this chapter considers the tensions between the comedy or fantasy or being the last man and the nightmare. Infertility and fertility are sites of anxiety and concern because there is, as these texts show, so much at stake. This chapter is pensive and proposes questions that remain unanswered, perhaps questions that are all the more prescient in light of the ongoing pandemic through which we are all living.
