ABSTRACT
Chapter 8 presents work carried out with four families who had one child participate in the Building Bridges project ran by the Science Museum in collaboration with the children's schools. Having introduced the families and their everyday practices in chapter 7, this chapter follows the same group of families as they prepare for and then go on an accompanied visit to the Science Museum. The analysis examines their visit experience, specifically the extent to which they were able to draw on the museum resources as well as on the cultural wealth of their family to make meaning. The museum visit experience of the families is shaped by their perceptions of science, familiarity with museums and ‘the rules of the game’ as well as their ability to draw on the museum and their family resources to resolve any resolving problems they encounter.
