ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the theoretical framework that underpins my analysis. It introduces the key theoretical concepts associated with my research themes at the macro-level of social structure and the micro-level of everyday family practice and meaning making. To do that, it draws from different fields such as sociology, anthropology and critical race theory, all of which contribute to an understanding of contemporary families as fluid and constituted through ‘doing’ and ‘displaying family’ activities from which family members derive their meaning. Family practice is also situated within the wider context of social structure by drawing on key concepts from theory of practice and critical race theory, such as habitus, cultural capital, Community Cultural Wealth, field, arena, setting.
