ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on the same families and case study museums as in chapter 4 and examines the family members’ expectations of how their visit would unfold, their visit plan and the paths they followed. It shows that there are differences – as well as some commonalities – between the expectations of children and adults. Distinct features of expectations are highlighted among adult family visitors, depending on their relationship with other family members. Therefore, grandparents and other relatives articulate their expectations in different terms as compared to parents. It also discusses the meaning family members made of their museum visits and examines this in relation to their expectations and how these are enacted in the space as witnessed through the sequencing of their visit activity or the path of their visit.
