ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Suu Kyi's ‘Kairos moment’: the short-term political window of opportunity. It depicts Suu Kyi's first steps in politics as calculated ones; only failure to strike a deal with the army forced her to join the opposition, but her attempts to gain power failed after the Burmese army's coup of September 1988. Nevertheless, her political debut was not that bad, despite its negative final outcome. Barely a month and half before, she had been a political nobody. Now, she skilfully used the window of opportunity created by extraordinary circumstances to enter politics. And, after more than 20 years of searching for her own place in life, she found her calling: to finish her father's job.
