ABSTRACT

Politically speaking, the NLD's electoral triumph was not the turning point in Suu Kyi's road to power. The breakthrough was achieved afterwards, in a series of behind-closed-doors meetings between Aung San Suu Kyi and high-ranking (ex) generals. The regime allowed her to take over the power but not the presidency. Instead she manoeuvred herself the position of State Counsellor (‘above the President’). This chapter describes Suu Kyi's rule (or rather reign) in cohabitation with the army once she achieved the position of (partial) power: the extraordinary position of the State Counsellor. Her governance was (and still is) unsuccessful though not disastrous.
