ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the ability of a 3D Geographical Information System (GIS) to manage and interpolate point cloud data derived from different types of 3D recording systems. Due to their high spatial resolution, these datasets can be used in a 3D GIS to identify new archaeological evidence. The chapter provides an overview of some of the possibilities connected with the use of 3D GIS for the analysis of archaeological surfaces and subsurfaces. The case studies presented were chosen to provide the reader with a broad and diverse overview of the possibilities connected with the use of these methods in different scenarios. Differently from the previous chapters, where the BOXES are characterised by more straightforward pipelines, the methods described in this chapter involve a more advanced knowledge of the tools available in GIS and a deeper understanding of the functions offered by the system.
