ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines a critical intersectional approach to studying religion in world politics. It rests on three principles: (1) Examination of religion in IR must focus first on context. (2) We must consider religion’s entanglements with other dimensions including race, gender, class, and environment. (3) We must be more precise about what we mean by “religion”, explicitly identifying the specific traditions we are examining, but also breaking “religion” down into sub-categories of actors, identities, and narratives.
