ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and discusses the main theoretical frameworks adopted, adapted, and applied in the book. It begins with accounts of dialogic theory and social semiotics/systemic functional theory, examining ways in which these traditions overlap and complement each other. This forms the basis of a presentation and discussion of engagement as modelled by other researchers, and includes suggestions for how those models might be applied to different semiotic systems, in this case verbal (or written), mathematical, and visual semiotics.
