ABSTRACT

Latin American cinema has its place in the global film market. First, this chapter analyzes the overall situation of the Latin American film industry’s development: its box office growth, and its film infrastructure development (mainly the growth of the number of screens). It also compares the box office development in Latin America with that of North America and other national cinemas in the world. Second, taking as examples Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Columbia, four countries where the film industry is relatively prosperous and developed in Latin America, the chapter analyzes the changing trends in the film industry, the efficiency of the film market and the infrastructure of the film industry in Latin America. Generally speaking, on the one hand, the film industry in Latin America is relatively well established and the film market is relatively stable; on the other, the development of commercial films lags behind that of art-house films. Hence the market competitiveness is inconsistent.
