ABSTRACT

The performance of a management team is not only affected by how well the members work together. Team boundary spanning can encompass a variety of activities. Coordination of task performance is done to align goals and strategies, ensure the effective use of resources, and coordinate work activities with mutually interdependent entities. A number of empirical studies indicate that all three activities (task coordination, information-gathering, and representation/information sharing) have a positive relationship to team performance. Team boundary spanning can make an important contribution to an organization’s competitiveness. Management teams that actively nurture extra-organizational relationships can promote healthy and profitable relationships between their own organization and other organizations. A management team is a special type of team when it comes to boundary spanning because the members spend most of their work time outside of the management team. Managers differ in how and to what extent they inform their subordinates about decisions made in their management teams.
