ABSTRACT
This chapter establishes the importance not only of Wikipedia as the world’s largest repository of knowledge but also how this knowledge system shapes what is possible and how we understand the world. We outline how Wikipedia works on a basic level and how its foundational “pillars” ideologically influence the construction of the encyclopedia, how the community functions, and preview the connection and importance of the following chapters.
