ABSTRACT
The question of connecting archaeological material with social standing has been difficult, as it mainly mirrors wealth. In this chapter, the houses where the owner can to some degree be known are examined. The owners’ status and political activity are compared with the peristyle in their house. In addition, the houses which can be linked to some sort of small-scale industrial activity or commerce are investigated to conclude how the so-called commercial classes used the peristyle to reflect their position in society.
