ABSTRACT
This book examines the intersection of youth protest, identity, and civic engagement in Hong Kong through the lens of education. It explores how education and identity have been debated in Hong Kong over time and the mark that such contestations have left on education. This chapter introduces the topic of Hong Kong as a community marked by nationalist imaginings. It indicates why education is important in understanding identity and protest in Hong Kong, and how education intersects with civic identity more generally. In the course, it reflects on the nature and diversity of Hong Kong. It also reveals what the sustained examination of Hong Kong education and youth protest can provide readers within and outside Hong Kong. It ends with a summary of the rest of the chapters of this text.
