ABSTRACT
What Hong Kong has been and is, and where and how it is culturally and politically situated in the world, varies based on one’s perspective. This chapter provides a historical overview to the processes of constructing and imagining the society of Hong Kong and its distinctive identities over time. The first section discusses the historical development of Hong Kong, focussing on its cultural and political identity and the role of youth, education, and nationalism in its formation. The next sections examine the cultural make-up of contemporary Hong Kong, exploring Chinese identity in Hong Kong and the role of ethnic minorities in the society and education historically and in the present day.
