ABSTRACT
As in other societies, localism, nationalism, and globalism play a role in Hong Kong. These forces impact people’s identities and the educational system in various ways. This chapter focuses on the place of nationalism in Hong Kong since the handover, and details the most recent national education debate. It begins by describing the ongoing evolution of the political and cultural identity of Hong Kong and detailing the major processes of political and educational development in the post-handover period. It then examines the national education debate and protests of 2012, the first large-scale youth movement in Hong Kong since the handover and a precursor to the broader Umbrella Movement that would take place a few years after.
