ABSTRACT
This chapter explores what happened during the Umbrella Movement of 2014 (also known as Occupy Central with Peace and Love). It begins by providing a poglitical backdrop to the movement, before examining it in relation to youth civic engagement and civic education. This chapter provides youth perspectives on their experiences and how they intersected with their understandings of civic education. Civic education was seen by youth as critical to their participation in civil society generally and in the movement. A comparison of experiences of youth educated in Hong Kong and Mainland China is also considered, as these two groups are often contrasted in terms of their civic education. While for many youth the outcomes were unsatisfactory, this was not the case for all. In particular, some ethnic minority participants also found the movement significant for shaping their sense of belonging in Hong Kong.
