ABSTRACT

People are educated by media in Hong Kong as elsewhere. However media, in Hong Kong and across societies, often contains biases. Typically, minority groups are represented in less positive ways than mainstream members of society, making the educative impact of media questionable. This chapter focuses on mainstream media representations of diversity in Hong Kong, considering what news media represents and what it teaches about diverse members of society. The chapter first indicates the value of media and the purpose of media studies within the context of education and in Hong Kong. The next two sections discuss how ethnic minorities and Mainland-based people (i.e. new arrivals, tourists, and people in the Mainland) are represented in Hong Kong.
