ABSTRACT

This chapter locates the grassroots organizing work and COVID-19 response of refugees in San Diego as a site where critical narratives regarding health, race, and solidarity are produced. This chapter considers health as a socially constructed category and site of political contestation. Centering oral histories conducted with the San Diego Refugee Communities Coalition, this chapter traces how refugees in San Diego define health, are situated within the ongoing impact of Title 42, and developed a model of solidarity to meet the most urgent needs of refugee families during the pandemic.
