ABSTRACT

Beyond terms used for refugees such as displacement and resettlement, this chapter frames narratives of refuge through the term unsettlement. How does one read unsettlement? How can aesthetic documentations of unsettlement enrich our understanding of literatures of forced migration? These two questions are central to the chapter. However, instead of asking how refugees are depicted in literature, or what can literary representations of refugees teach us about them, the chapter spells the need for a perspectival shift to explore what narratives of refuge can teach us about our literatures and interconnected histories. The chapter makes a case for “unsettlement” as a critical tool to comprehend and articulate refugee subjectivities.
