ABSTRACT

This chapter provides conclusion to Part 3 of this book. The part demonstrates that transhumanists’ and other techno-optimists’ presumed notion of “enhancement” is unsustainable because radical self-transformation does not only imply enhancing the human by technologically improving her capacities and adding new functions to her constitution but also introducing new and different standards for establishing what is “enhancement.” It develops the notion of self-formation as sublimation on the basis of insights derived from Freud, Lacan, Nietzsche and Peirce. This notion of sublimation elucidates how technology is becoming an intrinsic part of our mind, body and self, and could disrupt the standards that we use to establish what we consider “normal,” “healthy” or “enhanced” features and capacities.
