ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in ageing research and policy in developing countries. Particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where a decrease in fertility and mortality rates and improved healthcare and nutrition are expected to result in a significant increase in the ageing population. However, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to exacerbate comorbidity in older people and requires careful planning. The challenges of urbanisation in SSA are compounded by the fact that many young people are migrating to cities in search of employment, leading to the development of slums and other forms of informal settlements. Despite the need for policies that are responsive to the needs of ageing populations, city development planning in SSA has often neglected the needs of older people. The chapter explores the challenges and opportunities of urbanisation among ageing populations in SSA and how policy can address these issues, particularly through the “age-friendly cities and communities” initiative and other similar policies.
