ABSTRACT

“Beholding” is a cousin of discovery learning, the approach Neil Davidson adopted in his course for elementary school teachers and that I used in teaching Problem Solving at St. Mary’s. It involves two things: giving students problems which are new to them and plenty of time for investigation. At Sidwell, I occasionally came up with an appropriate problem or question for my math students to use in this way. I’d invite students to take a few minutes to contemplate a problem or question for which they weren’t prepared, then ask them to write in their journals, and, finally, to share in their groups.
