ABSTRACT

An old adage says, When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. So it was for me at David Mallery’s Administrator’s Life workshop where I was profoundly moved by the presentation of his friend, Paula Lawrence Wehmiller. Ten years later, I heard Paula speak at the National Cathedral. In the interim she’d ordained as an Episcopal priest. Reconnecting, I was excited to hear she was offering spiritual direction for teachers. I asked for her business card. A few years later, as I began sharing mindfulness in schools, I needed some support. I was creating programs effectively, but I needed assistance in seeing the big picture and how I fit into it. I contacted Paula, and we set up monthly phone calls. She would listen for half an hour, then ask me questions, share a relevant poem or tell me a story from her life that illuminated just where in this latest adventure I found myself. I felt privileged and grateful.
