ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates the most widespread science controversy in China – the GMO debate. Unlike hydropower, there were few organized anti-GMO efforts and far fewer established scientists behind the public rejection of the technology. Yet the general concern about food safety, the widespread public distrust in vested-interest groups, and changing media technology echoing individual activists’ struggle for public attention have defeated scientists’ robust control of biotechnology knowledge production in the public sphere.
