ABSTRACT
This chapter identifies the contributions of this book in methodological terms, emphasising the implications of geometrically accurate recording technologies for the understanding of reconstruction of built heritage at risk. Reconstruction as a replica in heritage areas that are constantly changing due to earthquakes is an act of replacement. In contrast, the proposed re-construction, a methodology for conserving heritage areas as an adaptive process enhanced by technology, can spatially respond to the cultural considerations of the inhabitants and learn from the sustainable heritage building techniques that characterise them. Acknowledging the continuous transformation of heritage dwellings in Chile, I analyse the role of the digital record and argue for the importance of time as a design component and for critically reflecting on the use of emerging technologies beyond their efficiency, opening further lines of enquiry.
