ABSTRACT
Indigenous statistics are too often fixated on Indigenous “problems” but ignore crucial aspects of Indigenous lifeworlds. This chapter describes Indigenous statistics as they could and should be. Focusing on Aotearoa, it draws on a wide range of examples that use strengths-based statistical approaches to explore Māori identity, culture and kinship. Recognizing that good statistics require more than good analysis, it also examines the important links between the practice of Indigenous statistics and the governance of Indigenous data through an overview of the Māori Data Governance Model.
