ABSTRACT
Since antiquity, humans have used animals in their pursuit of entertainment. As cultural values and society continue to evolve, there is a steady increase in concern over the welfare of animals that are used in the entertainment industry. This chapter will focus on the broad spectrum of animal uses in entertainment and the key items of interest regarding animal welfare in each field, based on discourse found in past and recent literature. Two main categories of animal use in entertainment are discussed. The first and most abundant is tourism, while the second includes film, television and advertising. As consumers become better educated on the welfare, conservation and governance issues that continue to plague these industries, tourism and film enterprises will need to more formally develop policy and regulations that place the interests of animals on a much higher level as well as be prepared to invest considerable resources into animal welfare changes.
