ABSTRACT

The last chapter brings together the various stands of this research in a final discussion and points out overarching reflections that draw together key empirical findings with theoretical concepts. Departing from the innovative analytical lens – the critical urban food perspective – this book sheds light on deprived urban food producers’ everyday lives, struggles, and related efforts towards food sovereignty. This perspective benefits from features of critical urban theory and critical agrarian studies to uncover the role and dynamics of urban agriculture in an exclusionary agri-food system. The structure of this chapter is oriented along four key contributions of the book. First, the critical urban food perspective is highlighted. Directly related to this perspective, the second contribution comprises novel insights into food producers lived realities at the urban outskirts. Third, the related political dimension of urban agriculture initiatives deserves specific attention. Finally, and closely linked to the preceding aspects, potential alliances to overcome urban agriculture’s niche existence and to propel food sovereignty efforts are elucidated. Ultimately, it shows what others can take further from the analytical perspective and the specific case of the agriculture initiative in urbanised South Africa.
