ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 may seem the trickiest, for how can we predict “surprises”? The chapter starts by discussing COVID-19: While the precise pandemic could not have been predicted, societies knew a pandemic of some sort was quite likely and could have been better prepared. We discuss how to predict surprises, and then proceed to identify several distinct surprises. In each case we discuss both how we might prepare for such a surprise, and how we might react to it in a way that moves us toward desirable futures.
