ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, the conclusion, I examine the nature of friendship’s relationship to human flourishing. I transition to a conversation about friendship ethics and the implications of technology on the ethics of friendship. A brief overview of communication ethics and philosophy of communication is provided, with particular attention to Fritz’s work on professional civility and Arnett’s work on communication ethics. Friendship is introduced as a practice that protects and promotes the good of human flourishing, and also as a substantive good itself. Each of the chapter themes is then explored as a particular practice that promotes and protects the good of friendship, with a discussion about how technology may affect or has affected these practices. The chapter ends by discussing Gurak’s concept of cyberliteracy as rhetorical consciousness as a key focus moving forward in friendship and technology ethics.
