ABSTRACT

The Introduction chapter provides an overview to the content of the book, introduces the reader to the underlying structure and possible ways of reading, and builds the conceptual basis for understanding the offered model. This chapter articulates and elaborates on method and methodology as urgent and necessary topics to discuss, not only in order to meet academic requirements, such as in a PhD thesis, but, more importantly, to devise complex inquiries and to be clear about how research processes and designs actually work.

After a brief opening, the Introduction discusses various approaches to methodology in research in and through the arts, in order to contextualise the approach of the book in this larger field. The chapter elaborates on the various use cases of this book and the offered Common Ground model, from the perspectives of being researcher, supervisor, or peer/critical friend. It closes with a description of the book’s structure and a reading guide.
