ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ways that peacemakers work within the limits of what is possible in their own context. When their societies or official leadership are wary of peacemaking, peacemakers navigate the space available to find ways to move towards peace, even when some avenues are closed to them by the sensibilities of their surrounding context. This chapter reflects on ways that the Georgian-South Ossetian peacemaking process adapted to changes in the surrounding context, seeking to do what was possible in each given stage. The process adapted to work within the constraints it faced. The chapter presents three stages of the Georgian-South Ossetian peacemaking process: the Point of View process, the Cost of Conflict process, and the Value of Dialogue process.
