ABSTRACT

This short chapter presents an analysis of the characteristics of successful peacemaking processes: successful peacemaking processes are possible, safe enough, push the envelope without tearing it, follow the lead of locals living the conflict, are sensitive to the specific context, change over time, include reflective practice and participatory evaluation, offer something new, transfer beyond the immediate process, engage those who are most open to peacemaking and eventually those who are more skeptical, and, pragmatically, cover essential costs. The chapter offers practitioners a synthesis of practical guidance that emerges from considering peacemaking experience. Finally, the chapter concludes with the core arguments of the book, offering scholars a synthesis of the theoretical insights and reflecting on their significance for peacemaking.
