ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the history of development of tourism in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) by inscribing the process into the framework of the Tourism Area Life Cycle concept. The second part of the chapter points to the main axes in the studies of Chernobyl tourism in the current literature on the subject, primarily in the context of the use of the notion of “dark tourism” in reference to Chernobyl tourism and understanding its characteristics.
