ABSTRACT

Climate change is a looming threat that risks unravelling decades of development in human health. The health sector can be an example to other sectors by aggressively embracing climate-smart strategies, and using its collective voice for leadership at the policy level. Most health systems have a high health carbon footprint, but can be made resilient and more effective by using efficient technologies and techniques. Air pollution is a public health issue of paramount importance requiring a multi-sectoral collaborative effort, and the role of the health sector is crucial in dealing with the increased burden of disease due to air pollution. Climate change impacts human health, economic development, agricultural systems and the availability of food and nutrients. Gendered differentials make women more vulnerable to health risks from climate change, including extreme weather events, temperature variations, air pollution, water contamination water scarcity and food insecurity, with pregnant women being especially vulnerable.
