ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present the main arguments and findings as well as the research used to include gender and diversity perspectives in transport. The chapter presents conceptualizations of how sex and gender matter in transport; gendered norms and stereotypes in the sector; and the idea of gender neutrality as well as perspectives on diversity, including theories of intersectionality. The aim is to advance previous work in the field with a particular focus on the area of smart transport. This includes presenting and reflecting on concepts of gender and diversity as well as adding new methodologies while linking these to challenges in the transport sector. Following a short introduction to concepts of gender and diversity, we investigate gender differences in the use of transport. We describe how different social categories affect people's transport needs as well as how they shape people's transport patterns. We introduce the analytical concept of gendered scripts that casts light on the social processes which take part of making mobility technologies. In the chapter, particular emphasis is placed on the conceptual approach of intersectionality, which provides a methodology for working with social differences in mobility. Throughout the chapter, we provide examples of the various inequalities in transport. Also, we highlight some of the cultural narratives that work to reproduce these inequalities.
