ABSTRACT

This chapter offers concrete insights and strategies for how to approach smart transport from perspectives on gender and diversity. It elaborates on the previous chapters by expanding the conceptual avenues of gender and diversity, directing the focus on approaches of recognizing these topics in the field of smart transport. The particular focus of this chapter is on how to introduce change in future transport policymaking, planning, and design. After looking into some of the most common pitfalls and gaps when dealing with gender and transport today, the chapter presents the use of ‘inclusive language’ to avoid reproducing inequalities and stereotypes of various gender- and diversity-related issues. The use of inclusive language is both about showing respect to people – here, people include both transport users and employees in the transport sector – and a way of inviting a greater variety of people to work in the sector. As such, inclusive language is one step towards a game change in the transport system. In introducing inclusive language, we take up the previous chapter's discussions of the problems of designing transport ‘for all’. The second part of the chapter is devoted to strategies of gender and diversity mainstreaming. These mainstreaming strategies present a strong focus on action – especially in processes of policy and planning.
