ABSTRACT

In this afterword, I will summarise a conversation I had with three teachers. It is “Robert” and “Eve” who teach ninth graders and “Peter” who teaches in sixth grade. They stand in the classroom every day, and they have a lot of teaching experience, including the use of both direct and indirect forms of teaching. The conversation addresses key topics from this book. Some questions challenge the interlocutors, questions such as the following: Is not indirectness in education too hazardous? Should not indirectness in teaching be avoided? Is there time for indirectness in education? The conversation also touches on directness and indirectness related to situation and context, school classes, individual students and age groups. Another topic that is highlighted in the conversation is that the use of directness and indirectness seem to be culturally dependent.
