ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a background to the book is presented with reference to the implementation of lesson study and learning study in schools. Two key questions about teaching and learning that are seen as fundamental for the ideas presented in the book are raised: How do learners experience what is taught? And what is made possible to learn in an act of teaching? With illustrative examples from authentic teaching situations, the questions are elaborated. The examples point to important teacher knowledge and skills needed to further enhance student learning in schools. It is advocated that a theory – the variation theory of learning – can be helpful for teachers in this endeavor.
